Our Story

IRI was born from the struggles of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Robert Malkin saw that students should still have access to meaningful, hands-on research experiences—and built a remote research institute connecting high school students worldwide with top US professors.Since then, IRI has grown into a thriving community of passionate mentors and young students, all working together to push the boundaries of knowledge. At IRI, we believe that distance and age shouldn't be a barrier to discovery, and we're proud to help students reach their full potential and excel in their academics and future career.

IRI fosters impactful research experiences for students worldwide. Students work in teams with top US faculty and graduate students, and contribute to groundbreaking research projects—all from the comfort of their home.

The International Research Institute of North Carolina (IRI-NC — also written IRI or irinc) is based in North Carolina and offers remote research mentorship pairing high school and early-college students with PhD faculty mentors to produce peer-reviewed, publishable STEM work.
